Update on Codebreaking: The UTSA Master Reel

July 2, 2012

In 2009, we wrote about a  2″ quad video tape reel we found in the university archives that we suspected contained old UTSA video advertisements  that aired on a local television station. We eventually sent the reel of film to the Media Preserve  to have the reel transferred to a digital format, and as we originally suspected, the reel contained seven UTSA advertisements from the late 1970s.

The series of advertisements contained seven commercials created by San Antonio ABC affiliate KSAT TV promoting the university in 1977. The 30- and 60-second commercials were intended to advertise both UTSA and individual programs including Environmental Studies, Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, and Applied Science.

You can watch the digitized videos in your browser by clicking “Play All” below, or click the “Playlist” button to load specific commercials in your browser.  You can also click the YouTube button to watch the videos there.

All of the digitized commercials are also available on our digital collections web site:

Registration Spring, November 1-30, 1977

Registration Summer, April 1-28, 1978

Registration Fall, June 1-July 31, 1978

Environmental Studies, December 20-April 1, 1978

Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, December 20-April 1, 1978

Applied Science, December 20-April 1, 1978

Institutional, December 20-April 1, 1978

The dates accompanying each title are assumed to indicate the dates during which the commercial aired, as all of the commercials were created in 1977.
