Women’s History Month: Women’s Professional Organizations

This is the fourth and final installment of our Women’s History Month series. This week we’re showcasing a few of the women’s professional organizations that the Archives collects.

American Association of University Women. San Antonio Branch.
The American Association of University Women is a college alumnae organization, formed in 1921 upon the merging of the Southern Association of College Women and Association of College Alumnae. The San Antonio Branch was established on January 9, 1909.
Association for Women in Communications, San Antonio Professional Chapter
Begun in the 1930s, the San Antonio Professional Chapter of the Association for Women in Communications’s mission is to champion the “advancement of women across all communications disciplines by recognizing excellence, promoting leadership and positioning its members at the forefront of the evolving communications era.”
Bexar County Women’s Bar Association
The Bexar County Women’s Bar Association began in 1982 with a mission to bring together women attorneys, legal assistants and law students in Bexar County and to provide a local forum for the exchange of dialogue and ideas relevant to women in the legal profession.
Business and Professional Women’s Club of San Antonio
The Business & Professional Women’s Club of San Antonio was organized on May 23, 1923 to offer professional women an opportunity to gather to promote their interests. The club’s main interests have been providing women with business opportunities, promoting opportunities for women in the professions and encouraging young women to enter the professions.
San Antonio Women’s Chamber of Commerce
The San Antonio Women’s Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote growth and economic development of women and to achieve the integration of women into leadership roles within the social, political, and economic structures of the public and private spheres of society.
Zonta Club of San Antonio
The Zonta Club of San Antonio was established in San Antonio on February 14, 1934. By implementing service programs and providing mutual support for members, the Club seeks to provide opportunities for under-privileged girls and young women; to improve the legal, political, educational, economic and professional status of women; and to advance understanding, goodwill, and peace.
